Twentieth Century is a hard-rock statement from Cold Chisel at full strength. Issued in 1984, the album sharpened the band’s muscular pub-rock attack while showing a broader melodic and emotional range, from the biting title track to the enduring classic Flame Trees. With the band’s trademark mix of grit, wit and working-class detail, it reflects why Cold Chisel became one of Australia’s most important rock acts. The record sits at a pivotal point in their catalogue, balancing tough guitars and singalong choruses with songs that helped define the sound and feeling of Australian rock in the 1980s.
